Zombie Anthology: Chelsie Sutherland

  1. It's interesting to see you loosen up your inking. I think the layering of The composition is nice, and of course we loved your idea when you presented it last week.

I am worried that, even though the limited palette is lovely, our scouts in a way get lost with so much of that green in the bushes (even with the blues). It's hard to tell since I only have the small version or the big version. Not saying you need to change it for Adam- just something to log away for the future. The city needs some more love. With a lack of details and that uniform color they almost look like pillars from stone hedge or some kind of rock formation.

You have the challenge of keeping up with the tarot cards that Adam saw. I think he was really blown away by those, and this still in your world but slightly different.

    Ok guys...keep the comments coming!

  2. The blue flames are supposed to be orangey-yellow in the actual file, and I think blogspot messed them up when I uploaded it. D< Here's the actual colors on photobucket: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v612/kiri_no_tanuki/zombiecolor.jpg

I'll mess around the with the colors for the scouts though! And maybe a different texture to separate the foreground from background may help too?

  3. I think the skyline in this is really nice. very pretty indeed. that almost worries me because its my eyes favorite place to wander off. i think lauren is right in that we lose the figures in all the craziness below. i think you can keep your craziness, but i would play with making the fire and the figures warmer colors even though i know blue fire is badass. i think in all the coolness that happens here warm figures will pop right out. pop right out and eat all our brains cause this is a nice piece. i also love the extreme foreground. linework is nice as well. so there.

  4. I think something still might need to happen between the zombies and the leaves in terms of color and line handling for that to be the thing our eye wants to stick with.

  5. I tried saving and uploading your "real" piece and the same thing happened! Could it be the way you saved it? Is it CMYK or RGB? Anyway, hopefully everyone will see the link.

The warm colors do help, but I agree with Mike that the bottom part is too busy. We have some line/value issues. With the top part so much clearer it also creates a divide in the piece and my eye goes there because it's a little easier to digest the shapes and so forth.

  6. It's saved in CMYK, so maybe that's what's messing with it? I don't even know D:

But I'll work on balancing the linework out more, somehow!

  7. i too agree with the awesomeness of the looseness of the lineness. and the idea of a zombie camper fire party that never left coz they just zombied and then got up and continued to grunt the horror stories that they no longer understand but are just going thru the motions of be cause its something thats familiar and inherent to their sourroundings.

besides that.... i think the layering is a good choice but with the green of the foliage in the fore and the green of the space in the back, it seems to have flattened a bit too much. a bit more blueing out in the atmosphere would serve a bit well. i also agree that the campers disappear in the growth of leafyness. which is probably the first thing i notice, or not as the case may be, when i look at this.

all in all, awesome and hilarious idea. and lovely line workses.

  8. Hello, me again.

Yes, it is because it's saved as CMYK I bet. Happens a lot...

Might I suggest making the zombies less green-skinned? maybe even slight purple tomes like it was suggested to Opheila. That could be a way to have them pop out and I think the color would still work in your palette. Photoshop, away!

  9. I agree with the fact that my eye wants to linger on the skyline instead of on the girlscouts. Perhaps if you darkened up the sky behind the buildings and made it more of a night scene the campfire could pop out the scouts more by being the brightest source of light. Right now they sky looks a lot more like early dawn than late night.
